Dean's List x MSE Profile Area: A Glimpse into the Future of Molecular Sciences – The World of Innovative Research

The Molecular Science and Engineering (MSE) Profile Area at RWTH Aachen University warmly invites you to an exciting journey into the future of sustainable innovation. Get a first-hand look at how we are tackling some of the biggest technological challenges of our time. Join us as we work to drive the transformation towards a resource-efficient and sustainable future!

Date: 6 June 2025
Time: 4:00–6:30 pm
Location: Otto-Bayer-Saal: Worringer Weg

We are going to combine an introduction to the profile area, a tour of a research facility and a meeting with our Role Models, Prof. Ulrich Schwaneberg and Dr. Shohana Islam, who will talk about their careers, share their learnings and inspiring journey in the field of MSE and answer questions.

AGENDA (4:00 – 6:30 pm)

  • From 3:30 pm: Arrival of students & registration
  • 4:00 pm: Welcome by the MSE Profile Area and introduction to the MSE research focus

Discover how this research area drives innovation for a sustainable future and technological transformation.

  • 4:10 pm: Career Paths in Research – Inspiring Journeys & Conversations with Role Models (talks + Q&A)
      • Prof. Ulrich Schwaneberg (Chair of Biotechnology, Institute Director, Professor of Biotechnology)
      • Dr. Shohana Islam (Global Development Enzymes and IP Defense @ BASF)
  • 5:00 pm: Lab Tours – Discover Groundbreaking Molecular Biology Research Firsthand (2 x 25 min sessions)

  • The labs of the Chair of Biotechnology – revolutionizing molecular processes
  • DWI – Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials – innovations at the intersection of chemistry, biology, and materials science

  • 5:50 pm: Get-Together | Networking & Refreshments (soft drinks and finger food)

About the MSE Profile Area

In MSE, researchers from chemistry, biology, physics, process engineering, mechanical engineering, and medicine collaboratively generate fundamental knowledge and technological know-how to understand, design, and develop molecular transformations, processes, and materials with programmable properties. These materials interact dynamically and purposefully across all length scales to enable the formation of complex, adaptive systems.

Key focus areas of MSE include Circular Bioeconomy, Biological Transformation, and Smart Medical Materials and Biohybrid Implants. Emerging future areas are increasingly shaped by the integration of AI and automation, as well as topics such as Green Hydrogen and Biohybrid Systems.

Application areas include chemistry, medical technology, plant protection/nutrition, consumer goods, textiles, lightweight construction, energy, and environmental and nature conservation. All are pursued with the goal of establishing a climate-neutral circular economy.
